About
Burt Elementary School is named in honor of local, African-American surgeon and doctor, Robert Tecumseh Burt, who opened the first hospital in the city. The school was first Burt High School, a large and prominent high school for African-Americans during segregation. Youth from local, rural counties around Montgomery County rose buses to attend the high school. In the 1960s, Wilma Rudolph was a student. The historical Burt High School was relocated to the Austin Peay State University campus and named Burt Elementary School.
