About
The area near Dunbar Cave served as a place of refuge for self-liberated enslaved African Americans following the US Army’s capture of Clarksville in 1862. By the end of 1864, the refugee camp swelled to more than 4,000 people, remaining active until at least 1867. Affricanna Town provided essential safety and security for those on their first steps toward freedom.
A Civil War Trails marker recognizing and illustrating the historic site was installed in Dunbar Cave State Park in 2021.
